SOME OF THE TRIALS OF SHAYKH AHMADOU BAMBA MBACKE
The following pages recapitulate some of the graces that God, in His mighty position, chose to bestow on Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacke. But what you are about to read does not represent the whole saga of Ahmadou Bamba in Gabon, where he lived for nearly eight years during his exile by the French Colonialist. Firstly, it is important to underline the mysticism of Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba, based on this verse of the Holy Qur’an that reads: “As for my worshippers, you [Satan] have no authority” 67:17.In essence, this verse was the mystical reason why the French Colonialist could never win, despite their sophisticated weaponry Secondly, it is through the following mystical poem that the Shaykh also retraces the very itinerary of the ship, which departed from Dakar on 21st September 1895, carrying him to Gabon.
O lord! Bless and preserve our Master Muhammad, his family and companions. I seek refuge in Allah against Satan the accursed. [God] has caused Satan to give up on me; and he [Satan, may he be cursed] will never have any authority whatsoever in anything emanating from me. “Verily, over my genuine faithful servants, you [Satan] have no authority.
1. Allah had caused Iblis to give up on me, at Jewol, When I besought Him by saying: O Protecting friend! 2. By the blessings of the angels of Badr, God had repelled anything that entails hardships, before Ndar (St Louis). 3. In Dakar, God had repelled any harm planned by the whisperer of evil [Satan]. 4. Abroad the ship, the Most Beneficent, had informed me That verily, I am the Assistant of the Apostle of Madina. 5. At [Guinee] Conakry, the Evolver had washed off of me anything that leads to ungraceful ness. 6. At Grand Bassam [Ivory Coast], Allah had deviated any one from attempting to confront me. 7. At Dahomey [Benin], the Most Merciful had led unto me overflowing graces that required no supplication. 8. At Libreville [Gabon], Allah had graced me with something that no Wali (friend of God) had ever gain access to. 9. God had yielded to me the companionship of the angels of Badr, who have repelled any possessor of wickedness or hatred. 10. Allah bring me forth, wherever I am, the sweet joy yielded through the repetition of “LA ILAHA ILLAL LAH” (there is no deity except Allah) 11. At Mayumba [Gabon], that which broke my heart, had been cast away, and my endeavor rose. 12. At Galwa [in Gabon], I have gained access to Being of God; and he has preserved me from anything that leads to destruction. 13. My mystical lyrics have preserved my life from the plots of the accursed devil in the midst of the ocean. 14. The All-Knowing had informed me at the majestic oceans, a form of knowledge He willed; and He had preserved me from the female idolaters. 15. At the drowning oceans, Allah preserved me from the wickedness of the female hypocrites, and from these who invite to the consumption of alcohol. 16. Allah the Most Beautiful had made accessible to me, in the midst of the accursed females, rejecters of faith, that which preserved me from their temptations. 17. The graces which have been led unto me, in the midst of the lofty oceans, have yielded divine joy and dazzling lights. 18. He (Allah) Who has preserved me from the push had extended to me divine light, in the midst of the dark places and those males who wronged their souls; 19. My blessedness in the sight of the Lord God is manifest, when I was in the midst of those given to entertainment. 20. Nothing other than the pleasure of God, The Everlasting does not come near me, in the midst of those given to the consumption of alcohol. To Allah rest my affairs. 21. Allah had purified me in the midst of the people of the Book, has protected me from damnation and from anything that results to admonition. 22. He, who had led certainty of knowledge unto me, has honored me, in the midst of those who engaged in idol worship. 23. I have communicated with Him, through the repetition of O Protecting friend! O the Helper! Verily Thou hath shielded me from Iblis at Jewol.
If Allah whishes to grant a grace to one, none can avert.”
